Senator Fuschillo Announces $1.5 Million In State Funding For Economic Revitalization Project In Freeport

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) today announced $1.5 million in state funding for an economic revitalization project that will bring new housing and businesses to the Village of Freeport. The funds will be used to redevelop the Plaza West area along Sunrise Highway.

"Redeveloping the Plaza West area will help attract new businesses and bring an infusion of jobs, housing, and revenue into the Village," said Senator Fuschillo, a member of the Senate's Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business Committee. "This property, which has been abandoned and unused for years, will now become one of the cornerstones of the Freeport economy."

"The Glacken administration is grateful to Senator Fuschillo and Governor Pataki for this funding, which will help bring this important project to fruition," said Mayor Bill Glacken.

The project includes:

- Complete renovation of the old Meadowbrook Bank building, which will now be used as office space for small businesses.

- Construction of a new building that will hold 225 rental apartments to expand housing opportunities for local residents.

- Over 25,000 square feet of retail businesses on the ground floors of each building.

According to the Village of Freeport, construction on the project is expected to begin next year.

The funds are part of the Restore New York’s Communities Initiative (Restore-NY), a program established by the State Legislature which is designed to aid municipalities in rehabilitating or removing obsolete or rundown commercial and residential properties, making these sites attractive to residents and businesses searching for new investment opportunities.
