Senator Fuschillo Calls On MTA To Implement "quiet Car" Program On Lirr Trains

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) has called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to implement a "Quiet Car" program on all Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trains that would allow commuters to sit in a designated train car to work or rest without being disturbed by cell phones or loud conversations. Senator Fuschillo made the request in a letter to MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow.

"Over the summer, I conducted my annual commuter survey at train stations throughout the 8th Senate District, and many local commuters responded that they would welcome this program on the LIRR," said Senator Fuschillo, a member of the Senate’s Transportation Committee. "This is a common sense measure that the MTA can enact to improve the quality of service that commuters receive and make riding the train more enjoyable."

Senator Fuschillo pointed to the success of AMTRAK’s "Quiet Car" program as a model for the MTA. AMTRAK’s "Quiet Car" program designates one car on the train where passengers are asked to refrain from using cell phones, pagers, loud computer programs or engaging in loud conversations. Signs are displayed throughout the car to remind passengers of the car’s designation, and those who do not follow the guidelines may be asked to relocate to another car. Seats in these cars are available without reservation or additional charge.

The program was so successful that AMTRAK expanded the number of routes that have "Quiet Car" service in its national network.

Senator Fuschillo also created an online petition on his website that commuters can sign to support his request for "Quiet Cars" on the LIRR. Anyone who would like to sign the petition can do so by CLICKING HERE.

Recently, I conducted a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Commuter Survey for the residents in my area. The results of the survey were forwarded to Acting President Ray Kenny, however, I want to draw your attention to one issue in particular. The responses indicate that many commuters are disturbed by cell phones and loud conversations on the train and would welcome the implementation of "Quiet Cars" where they could work or rest without distraction.

As you know, AMTRAK instituted a program where one car is designated a "Quiet Car" in which passengers are asked to refrain from using cell phones, pagers, loud computer programs or engaging in loud conversations. Signs are displayed to remind passengers of the car’s designation, and those who do not follow the guidelines may be asked to relocate to another car. Seats in these cars are not reserved but are available on a first-come, first-served basis, without additional charge.

The program was so successful that AMTRAK expanded the number of routes that have Quiet Car service in its national network. I believe this program would be equally popular among LIRR commuters.

I am hereby requesting that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority establish the same policy for the LIRR.
