Senator Fuschillo Kicks Off Start Of Year-round Tax Free Clothing

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District), Chairman of the Senate’s Consumer Protection Committee, is reminding consumers and businesses that as of Saturday, April 1st, a year-round exemption from the State’s four percent portion of sales and use taxes is in effect on the purchase of clothing and footwear under $110 per item or per pair.

"One of our top priorities during the budget process was to provide residents with tax relief," said Senator Fuschillo. "This measure will allow consumers to save some of their hard earned money, and will also help stimulate more business for store owners."

To help kick off the start of this new year-round tax exemption, Senator Fuschillo and his wife Ellen took their 6 year old daughter Catie clothes shopping at a local children’s clothing store in Bellmore.

The state portion of the sales tax on clothing and shoe purchases under $110 was eliminated by the State Legislature as part of the 2006-07 budget. The exemption is only on the state’s 4% percent sales tax and does not apply to the locally imposed sales and use taxes in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
