Senator Fuschillo Secures State Funding To Enhance Quality Of Life For People With Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) announced today that he secured $10,000 in state funding for The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter to help increase the quality of life for people living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The state funding will help defray the costs of loaning durable medical equipment and augmentative communication devices to ALS patients. These devices can increase a patient’s quality of life by making them more comfortable, independent, and safe. They also allow the patient to remain in the comfort of their own home for longer periods of time. However, many patients cannot afford this technology or do not have sufficient insurance coverage.

"By providing this technology free of charge to patients, The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter is greatly increasing the quality of life and care that ALS patients receive. This also allows patients to spend more time in the comfort of their own home with their loved ones," said Senator Fuschillo, a member of the Senate’s Health Committee. "These are vital services that will greatly benefit ALS patients and their families."

"On behalf of The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter, I would like to thank Senator Fuschillo for securing $10,000 for our organization’s equipment loan and augmentative communication programs," stated Jacqueline Reinhard, Executive Director of The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter. "These programs are an essential service we provide to people with ALS in the greater New York area. Senator Fuschillo’s support will greatly aid our mission of providing quality patient services to those suffering with ALS while we search for a cure."

The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter has been providing high quality care and support services to ALS patients and their families since 1994. The Association is also affiliated with the Stony Brook ALS clinic at Stony Brook University Hospital, which offers medical treatment, rehabilitation techniques, and psychological support to ALS patients.
