Senator Fuschillo Welcomes Massapequa's Statewide Environmental Contest Winner To State Capitol

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District), recently congratulated Rebecca Westbrook, a second grade student at East Lake Elementary School in Massapequa, on winning first place in the New York State Senate’s annual I*ma*GREEN*nation environmental contest. Rebecca, along with her family and her teacher, visited Senator Fuschillo in Albany, where her award winning project was being displayed.

The I*ma*GREEN*nation program is a statewide competition for school children in grades one through eight. The goal is to encourage children to develop an awareness of the environment and its resources. There are four different project categories in the program: Arts & Crafts, Science and Technology, Literature, and Video. Rebecca’s project took first place in Division 1 (Grades 1-3) of the Literature Category.

For her project, Rebecca focused on the importance of recycling. Rebecca grew her hair ten inches in ten months, letting it grow long enough to donate to "Locks of Love". "Locks of Love" is a non-profit organizations that uses donated hair to make hairpieces for financially disadvantaged children 18 years and younger suffering from long-term medical hair loss. By "recycling" her hair instead of simply throwing it out, Rebecca demonstrated how we can help people in need.

"Rebecca’s selfless nature and desire to help others already makes her a winner. The fact that her project was chosen as a first place entry is an additional reward for such a thoughtful and caring young lady. We are all extremely proud of her," said Senator Fuschillo.
