Skelos Announces 2006 "cadet Appointment Program" For Suny Maritime College

New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) has announced he is seeking applicants for the State University of New York Maritime College's "Cadet Appointment Program" for fall 2006. Senator Skelos will nominate two qualified high school seniors for an opportunity to receive a state-funded four-year scholarship to the college.

"For more than a century, SUNY Maritime has trained the leaders of tomorrow," said Senator Skelos. "This is a tremendous opportunity for local students to receive a full scholarship to this great institution and begin a rewarding career in public service that will last a lifetime."

Located on the Throggs Neck peninsula in New York City, Maritime College is the oldest maritime school in the nation and one of the original schools chartered into the SUNY system. The college has proudly trained future leaders in government and private industry--at land and sea--since 1874. While pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering, business or science, cadets also prepare for licensure as ship officers (3rd Mate or 3rd Assistant Engineer) in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Although no military service is required upon graduation, a variety of voluntary ROTC options are available to interested cadets.

The College’s curriculum blends classroom instruction with three summers of international travel aboard America’s best-equipped training vessel, EMPIRE STATE VI; students are exposed to the cultures of the world while polishing their skills at the helm of a 565-foot ship or at the throttle of its 17,000-horsepower engines. This unique combination of theoretical and hands-on practical learning leads to an outstanding 100% career placement rate. With an intense and specialized preparation for the board spectrum of science, technology, engineering and business opportunities within the maritime industry and beyond, Maritime graduates are equipped with the leadership and teamwork skills necessary to excel as successful citizens of the world.

Students who wish to seek a nomination from Senator Skelos must have a combined SAT (math & critical reading) score of 1200, a high school GPA of at least 90%, have demonstrated leadership and community service experience and be residents of the 9th Senatorial District. Completed applications must be received by Maritime College by March 15th.
