Senator Farley Announces Feb. 19th - 25th Is Engineers Week

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C - Schenectady) notes that the week of February 19th through February 25th is designated as National Engineers Week. This week highlights the importance of engineers and their influences on our society.

"Our area's history is rich with contributions from local engineers and scientists," Senator Farley said. "One notable development in Schenectady's history dates back to the 1880s when Thomas Edison brought his company, Edison Machine Works, to the area. This company evolved into General Electric."

Senator Farley also recognized the achievements of Katharine Burr Blodgett, the first female researcher, engineer and scientist at General Electric Company. She is credited with inventing nonreflecting glass, which is commonly found today in camera lenses and optical equipment, automobile windows, eyeglasses, picture frames and submarine periscopes.

Engineers are extremely important in both the private and public sectors. State and local governmental engineers are responsible for designing, creating or maintaining public infrastructures such as roads, bridges and airports.
