Senator Farley Announces March 14th Is Pi Day

As a former teacher, State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C - Schenectady) informs constituents that March 14th is celebrated as Pi Day. This is an opportunity to get students excited about math and science and promote learning.

"Pi is the ratio between the diameter and circumference of a circle. Because Pi is an infinite decimal number that begins with 3.14, March 14th (3-14) is perfect to highlight Pi and promote math," Senator Farley explained.

Senator Farley reported that at least one school in his district is saluting Pi Day. Students at Gloversville Enlarged School District have been creating posters and T-shirts commemorating Pi Day and will conduct Pi related contests on March 14th.

"This is also an excellent way to celebrate brilliant mathematician Albert Einstein's birthday," Senator Farley added. Einstein was born on March 14th in 1879.

Senator Farley reported there are several new math and science initiatives before the New York State Legislature this year. They include: a Science and Technology Taskforce that would develop a Statewide plan to strengthen science and technology education; increase funding for the Science and Technology Entry Program/Collegiate Science and Technology Program (STEP/CSTEP) to increase the number of underrepresented students successfully pursuing math and science in high school and college; provide recruitment incentives and tuition reimbursement to expand the pool of math/science teachers entering the teaching profession; and provide 500 annual scholarships equal to SUNY tuition to students who commit to teaching math or science in New York's public schools for five years.
