Senator Farley Announces State Sales Tax On Clothing To End April 1st

Hugh T. Farley

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R, C - Schenectady) announced today that beginning Saturday, April 1st, all purchases of clothing and shoes priced up to $110 will now be exempt from New York State's portion of the sales tax.

"For the past few years, the State has given two sales-tax free weeks," Senator Farley said. "Now, every week is State sales tax-free week."

Senator Farley clarifies that it is only the State portion of the sales tax that is being eliminated. However, localities may choose to eliminate the local portion of the sales tax. "In other words, in most areas, the sales tax on clothing and shoes under $110 would drop from 7 or 8 percent to 3 or 4 percent," Senator Farley said.

Senator Farley urges people to check with their local municipalities to see what the sales tax rate will be after April 1st.
