Senator Farley Announces Student Displays On Historical Women To Be At Canal Days On July 8th

Last March, State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) invited school children to create essays, poems, collages and posters on local historical women. These materials were complied into a display that traveled to schools such as D.H. Robbins Elementary School in St. Johnsville, St. Mary's Institute in Amsterdam and Park Terrace Elementary School in Gloversville. The exhibit will now be displayed on Saturday, July 8th, at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site as part of Ft. Hunter's Canal Days celebration. Hours of the exhibit will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"The children did a fabulous job with this assignment," Senator Farley said. "I am terribly proud of their efforts to honor local history and historical women, and am pleased to bring this historical display to a great historical place -- Schoharie Crossing."

Children created original works focusing on the accomplishments of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Kateri Tekakwitha, Rose Knox and other historical women.

Senator Farley's display will also include free booklets that contain biographical information on Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton -- who both have ties to Montgomery and Fulton counties -- Lucille Ball, "Grandma Moses" Robinson, Harriet Tubman and Emma Willard, among others, all with strong links to New York.

"History buffs will enjoy Canal Days," Senator Farley said. "My table will also have several State and local history brochures and guides. Furthermore, the festival takes place in and around the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site, which preserves several structures dating back to the beginning of the Erie Canal."
