James S. Alesi

Senator Jim Alesi (R,C - Perinton) and Senator Joe Robach announced that a Legislative Resolution, honoring Dr. Manuel Rivera as the 2006 National Superintendent of the Year, passed the New York State Senate today, March 13, 2006.

The resolution, drafted by Senator Alesi and Robach, recognizes his award which is co-sponsored annually by the American Association of School Administrators and ARAMARK Education. Each year they bestow this most prestigious award upon an individual who has demonstrated outstanding all around leadership.

"Dr. Rivera exemplifies high-quality leadership in our nation’s public schools; he has focused on raising achievement standards while proving that Rochester area schools can compete with the best in the nation," said Senator Alesi. "His determination and guidance have been instrumental in the district’s steady improvements during his tenure and I’m honored to recognize his achievements."

Dr. Rivera has been the Superintendent of the Rochester City School District since 2002, previously he was executive Vice-President of Development for Edison Schools Inc. His desire to work more closely with schools, students and their families drew him back to Rochester where he had previously served as superintendent from 1991 to 1994 and where he began his illustrious career as a teacher in 1975.

"We're encouraged to see Dr. Rivera get this national attention based on his utilization of resources to create quality outcomes in the city school district," said Senator Robach. "Rochester clearly has some great programs throughout the entire K-12 system that would not happen without his strong leadership."
