Senator Alesi Supports Adult Literacy Drop-in Program

James S. Alesi

New York State Senator James Alesi has sponsored the award of a $10,000 grant that continues an innovative Drop-In Program managed by Literacy Volunteers of Rochester (LVR) at their headquarters, 249 Highland Avenue, Rochester.

"We are grateful to Senator Alesi because this grant allows us to serve more adult literacy students on our waiting list immediately. 100 students are currently waiting to be matched one-to-one with a volunteer tutor in our Basic Literacy and English programs," explained Robert Mahar, executive director of Literacy Volunteers of Rochester. "We are always in search of creative ways to reach more people, and the Drop-In Program lets us start people on the road to improving their literacy."

The Drop-In Program operates on Friday mornings at the LVR office on Highland Avenue. The program is designed to help waiting students get started on their literacy goals while waiting to be matched with an individual tutor. The Literacy Volunteers program is centered on individual student goals which may include completing a job application, reading a newspaper, reading a book to one's child, or any other goals the student has in the area of literacy.

To volunteer as a tutor with Literacy Volunteers, you must be over 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Learn more about Literacy Volunteers of Rochester at www.LiteracyRochester.org or call (585) 473-3030.
