Legislature Okays Cortland Health Care Bill

A bill approved by the state legislature and now bound for the governor's desk will permit Cortland Memorial Nursing Facility to expand its adult day health care program by up to 16 slots if the facility is unable to accommodate individuals awaiting placement. The facility is currently at its maximum 24 spaces. Senate bill 7979 has been approved by both the senate and the assembly.

"With the state health department's moratorium on the establishment of new adult day health care programs in place, many seniors in Cortland County and the surrounding area are unable to receive the appropriate care that they need," Senator Seward said. "The bill passed by the legislature will allow the Cortland Regional Medical Center to assist more senior citizens in need of medical care and the social services the program offers."

An adult day health care program provides oupatient medical care as well as social activities to the frail elderly and disabled population. The program allows recipients to receive much needed services while still living in their own homes.

The bill is sponsored in the assembly by Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton. It now goes to the governor.
