Seward Announces Suny Scholarship Opportunity

Senator James L. Seward has announced he is accepting applications for appointments to the State University of New York Maritime College under the state's cadet appointment program.

Under the program, state legislators nominate eligible students to attend the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College as part of its prestigious regiment of cadets. An applicant who is nominated and accepted for admission to the college participates in the regiment of cadets and receives a full tuition scholarship for the four consecutive years following his or her admission into the program.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for high school students considering careers in maritime business, engineering or science," said Seward, who was one of the sponsors of the program.
While pursuing an undergraduate degree, cadets also prepare for licensure as ships' officers (3rd mate or 3rd assistant engineer) in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Although no military service is required upon graduation, a variety of voluntary ROTC options are available to interested cadets.

Located on the beautiful Throggs Neck peninsula in New York City, Maritime College is the oldest maritime school in the nation and one of the original schools chartered by the SUNY system. The college has trained future leaders in government and private industry -- at land and sea -- since 1874.

The college’s curriculum blends classroom instruction with three summers of international travel aboard America’s best-equipped training vessel, Empire State VI. Students are exposed to the cultures of the world while polishing their skills at the helm of a 565-foot ship or at the throttle of its 17,000-horsepower engines. The unique combination of theoretical and hands-on learning leads to an outstanding 100 percent career placement rate.

Students who wish to seek a nomination from Senator Seward must have a combined SAT score of 1200, a high school academic average of at least 90 percent, have demonstrated leadership and community service experience and be residents of the 51st Senatorial District. Completed applications must be at Maritime College by March 15th.
