Senator Flanagan Commemorates Earth Day

John J. Flanagan

To commemorate the 36th Annual Earth Day, Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) visited the Edgewood Preserve to view the ongoing revitalization of this environmentally important property. Joining Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone, Babylon Supervisor Steve Bellone and representatives from local and state government, Senator Flanagan celebrated the efforts of the concerned citizens who work everyday to protect our environment.

"This is a great day to remember that we must constantly work to protect our environment to ensure that the world we provide our children is in great shape. For that reason, I applaud the efforts of all the workers and volunteers who make Long Island a better place," stated Senator Flanagan. "Long Island is a great place to live because of the natural beauty we all enjoy and that is due to the efforts of these volunteers and workers."

First celebrated on April 22, 1970, Earth Day is an annual celebration of the beauty of our environment and a recognition of the efforts of the organizations thatwork to protect its future. The goal of the day is to begin a yearlong commitment to protecting the natural splendor and resources of the Earth.

The Edgewood Preserve, which covers parts of both Dix Hills and Deer Park, is comprised of former sections of the Pilgrim State Psychiatric Center and the now-defunct Edgewood State Hospital. It is owned by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

On the day Senator Flanagan traveled to the preserve, workers from various levels of government were working with local volunteers to haul away abandoned vehicles and other large pieces of debris. The debris had been illegally dumped on the preserve over the years.

To help fight environmental abuse, residents should call the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at 1-800-TIPP DEC (1-800-847-7332) if they see dumping or polluting.
