Senator Flanagan Discusses Government With Smithtown Scouts

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently joined with a group of Smithtown webelos to discuss his job as New York State Senator. The visit was arranged by scout leaders to provide the children with insight into the governmental process.

Senator Flanagan talked to the scouts about how state government works and how laws are passed. As part of their discussion, Senator Flanagan had the children take part in a mock legislative session and vote on a piece of legislation regarding banning homework. The measure was overwhelmingly approved by the student legislators.

Afterward, the scouts had the opportunity to ask Senator Flanagan questions and offer ideas about new laws.

"This was a great opportunity to teach these kids about how government works and how it affects all of our lives. They were a great audience and they asked some great questions," said Senator Flanagan. "Speaking to the leaders of tomorrow is a great part of my job and I hope that they learned a great deal."
