Senator Flanagan Honors Setauket Intel Winner

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) hosted Ward Melville student Jerrold Lieblich in Albany to recognize his top ten placing in the Intel Science Talent Search. Senator Flanagan sponsored a Senate resolution and arranged for the East Setauket student to be introduced to the entire Senate during a recent session.

As Senator Flanagan's guests in Albany, Jerrold, along with his mother Perri Fitterman, toured the State Capitol prior to visiting the Senate Chamber.

Jerrold, who is headed to Yale University, finished fifth in the nationwide competition and received a $25,000 scholarship for his project, "When the Brain Doesn't Hear What the Mind Does: A Lexical Approach to McGurk Adaptation." Sponsored by Intel, the Science Talent Search is the oldest and most highly regarded pre-college science competition in the country.

Beginning in 1942, those who have competed in the competition hold more than 100 of the most coveted science and math honors in the world, including the Nobel Prize and the National Medal of Science. Each year, over 1,500 students compete to win the top prize of a $100,000 scholarship.

"It is such a privilege to honor those who achieve greatness in academics. Jerrold's top ten finish in this prestigious competition is a great achievement for him, his family and his school. Along with the efforts of the other students who took part in this competition, it is a great sign of the future of our state in this realm of education," stated Senator Flanagan.

Thirteen students from across New York State, including seven from Long Island, were named as finalists in this year's competition.
