Senator Flanagan Joins Burr Intermediate School To Celebrate Reading

John J. Flanagan

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently visited the Burr Intermediate School in Commack to join them in celebrating their yearlong Reading Challenge. Senator Flanagan joined over 80 students at a special "Free to Read" program.

The Burr Reading Challenge is an annual school-wide program designed to promote reading. The children who participate are encouraged to read with their families everyday and to visit the local library on a regular basis. The program also includes a monthly reading challenge which is shared with the entire school community.

The goal is to encourage the children to read at least three books every month.

The event that Senator Flanagan attended was comprised of two Reading Challenge Representatives from each class participating class. These students are chosen by their teachers and classmates.

"Reading is the very foundation that education is built upon. By participating in this yearlong event, students are continually reminded of the importance of reading and learn the joy of reading at a young age. I congratulate all the students who have taken the reading challenge and applaud the school for initiating this successful program," stated Senator Flanagan.
