Senator Flanagan Joins Families And Union Members To Dedicate A Piece Of The Twin Towers

John J. Flanagan

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) joined with the Long Island 9/11 Memorial Board to honor the labor unions who took part in recovery efforts at Ground Zero. The eighteen unions honored were each presented with an honorary flag for their dedicated efforts during a ceremony held at the future site of a seven-acre 9/11 memorial on the campus of Farmingdale State University.

The event was highlighted by the unveiling of a 1,500 pound I-beam that was recovered at Ground Zero and will become a centerpiece of the future memorial. The beam will stand to honor the efforts of the union workers who were an integral part of the recovery efforts.

The Long Island 9/11 Memorial will honor all 455 Long Islanders who perished on 9/11. According to plans on display at the event, the memorial will include a museum, amphitheater, reflective pond and commemorative wall.
