Senator Flanagan Renews His Call To Fight Online Predators

John J. Flanagan

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) renewed his call to close a dangerous loophole in New York State law to protect the children of our community. The change, which Senator Flanagan voted for in June, would allow police to charge those who send sexually explicit e-mail to minors with a felony regardless of the actually substance of the messages.

This change is necessary since the courts have used a loophole in the law to rule that e-mail that contains explicit text but lacks photos or images is not covered under current law. This week, the police were able to catch a convicted sexual predator doing this very thing but they only have the ability to charge him with misdemeanors.
