Senator Flanagan Secures Million Dollars In Funding For Brookhaven

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) today announced that he has secured one million dollars in state funding for several projects throughout the Town of Brookhaven. Joined by Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Brian X. Foley and Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh (3rd Council District), Senator Flanagan announced the funding at a press conference at Brookhaven Town Hall.

"This will enable the Town to improve the roadways at a variety of intersections that need to be improved. Working with Supervisor Foley, I have been able to bring the needed funding to ensure that these important projects are able to be undertaken," stated Senator Flanagan.

"Given the town’s regional significance, it is imperative that we cultivate outstanding working relationships with our state representatives," said Brookhaven Town Supervisor Brian X. Foley. "This state funding will enable the town to create safer roadways for our pedestrians and motorists. It is another example of what can be accomplished when different levels of government cooperate in working for the public good."

"The residents along Dare Road and the school community have been asking for sidewalks in that area for a long time. Sidewalks will provide safe passage for the many residents that use that area," added Brookhaven Councilwoman Walsh.

All four projects that will benefit from the state funding secured by Senator Flanagan were chosen by Supervisor Foley's administration for work due to a variety of local concerns.

According to the Town of Brookhaven, the four locations are:

The intersection of Granny Road at Bicycle Path/Old Medford Avenue in Farmingville: With the growth of traffic at this intersection due to Town Hall and Sachem High School East, the corner needs to be able to hand more volume. The improvements at this corner will include re-grading, road widening and ADA compliant curb work.

The intersection of Gnarled Hollow Road at Old Town Road in Setauket: Due to traffic flow issues, the existing traffic control will be upgraded to provide safer vehicle usage. This will include the installation of traffic signals and improved pavement markings.

The intersection of College Road and Horseblock Road in Selden: On the Town's High Frequency Accident list, this intersection will be redesigned to resolve the high accident rate and to change the traffic patterns. The improvements will include road modifications and installation of a traffic signal.

Stagecoach Elementary School in Selden: To improve the safety around this school, the Town will install concrete curb and sidewalks and improve the guide rails around the location.

"It is vital to the residents of Brookhaven that the state provide needed funding for projects that are deemed necessary by the Town officials. This will allow for safe travel around town, especially the project at the elementary school, without having any effect on the town budget," stated Senator Flanagan. "I look forward to coordinating on more projects with Supervisor Foley in the future to provide the best community possible for our residents."
