Senator Flanagan Secures Million Dollars For Transportation Projects In Smithtown

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) publicly announced that he has secured $1,000,000 in funding to support construction projects throughout the Town of Smithtown. This funding, which was requested by Town Supervisor Patrick R. Vecchio prior to the summer, will enable the Town to expand their efforts to improve the roads and sidewalks throughout the district.

Delivered to the Town of Smithtown as discretionary funds for capital projects, the funding secured by Senator Flanagan can be utilized on transportation related projects of the Town's choosing.

"Supervisor Vecchio approached me months ago to request this funding for improvements to the Town's infrastructure. Since the Town knows what projects they need to focus on, it was important to provide this assistance in the most flexible way possible so that it will provide the greatest benefit to the residents of Smithtown," stated Senator Flanagan. "The State has provided funding while the decisions will continue to be made by local officials and this is how it should be."

According to Supervisor Vecchio, the state funding will be utilized by the Town of Smithtown to cover the cost of some town-wide projects including local sidewalk projects and roadway repaving.

"The Town of Smithtown is constantly looking to maintain our sidewalks and improve our roadways. The money that Senator Flanagan has secured will allow us to move ahead with a variety of projects, especially in sidewalk repair, that we have been planning without negatively impacting our budget," said Supervisor Vecchio. "I thank Senator Flanagan for his hard work and for continuing to deliver for the residents of our town."

Senator Flanagan recently joined Supervisor Vecchio in Commack to watch as the construction crews replaced neighborhood sidewalks. The crew at the site was removing the old sidewalk and replacing the old concrete with a smoother, safer walkway.

"Local governments must be assisted with funding for these types of repairs but they should continue to make the decisions to best serve their residents. I look forward to continuing to work with Supervisor Vecchio to enhance the quality of life for the residents of Smithtown," concluded Senator Flanagan.
