Senator Flanagan Works With Cleary School For The Deaf To Enhance Student Safety

John J. Flanagan

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently visited the Cleary School for the Deaf in Nesconset to view the new and improved playground facilities that were funded through a state grant he was able to secure. The $50,000 grant was used by the school to offset the cost of the recreation area improvements.

A majority of the funding was used by the school to enhance the safety of the play area. The centerpiece of those improvements was the installation of a new synthetic safety surface that will soften the impact of falls and trips. The surface is designed to provide more cushion when a child falls to reduce the chance of injury.

To further their safety enhancements, the school also used some of the funding to install a new fence around the play area to protect the children while they use the area.
And, to provide additional safety for both students and adults alike, the Cleary School resurfaced the walkways that surround the play area. These newly paved walkways are free of chips and cracks and allow for safer movement.

"Safety and security of the children is our primary concern and we wish to thank Senator Flanagan for helping make our playground safer for the children," stated Superintendent Ken Morseon.

The school also used a portion of the funding to upgrade the children's play equipment to further the recreational benefits of the playground. Included in these improvements were a new set of swings and a new canopy that will provide needed shade during the summer months.

"This project will greatly enhance the educational experience of the children and I am glad that I could play a role in helping the administration realize its goal. Kids need to play and exercise and they need to do so safely. These enhancements will have a tremendous impact on achieving all those goals and will greatly accentuate their learning," stated Senator Flanagan.
