The Senator gathered elected officials and community leaders to support Metropolitan Hospital at a press conference on November 22. Metropolitan, the only public hospital in East Harlem , provides comprehensive care for the community's most pressing health care needs. It's also a safety net for residents who may lack private insurance or proper immigration status. When the Governor's Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century did release its final report on November 28, the hospital was left untouched. "Along with my colleagues in the state legislature, I will now review the overall recommendations of the Governor's Commission," said the Senator. "We can protect New York 's public health care system while also becoming more fiscally responsible. The two are not mutually exclusive."
