Serrano Scores Big On Environment

          State senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) was the most environmentally conscious member of the New York State Senate in 2006. This according to the annual Voters’ Guide from the EPL/Environmental Advocates organization.

          "I want to thank EPL/Environmental Advocates for honoring my environmental record," said Senator Serrano. "I am strongly committed to improving the quality of New York’s air and water, protecting our green spaces and promoting a more sustainable environment."

          The report commended the senator for his longtime environmental advocacy: "As city councilman, he sponsored legislation to address environmental threats to children, and as Senator he furthered these efforts, sponsoring legislation to promote community parks and limit hazardous waste siting."

           Senator Serrano scored 91 points out of a possible 100 on the Voters’ Guide. The Senate average was 67 points. Rankings were based on a legislators’ support for bills deemed beneficial to the New York environment, and opposition to those with potentially harmful consequences.

          Consideration was also taken for lawmakers who co-sponsored environment-friendly bills, or favored motions to petition them out of committee.
