Golden Applauds Cuny Chancellor's Swift Action To Halt Naming Of Cuny Student Center

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C, Brooklyn), a former New York City Police Officer, today is applauding the decision of Chancellor Matthew Goldstein to enforce the regulations of the City University of New York and urge the dismantling of an inappropriate sign naming the community and student center after "Guillermo Morales and Assata Shakur".

Senator Golden stated, "As a former New York City Police Officer, I applaud Chancellor Goldstein for correcting the inappropriate manner in which the community and student center was renamed in honor of Guillermo Morales and Assata Shakur, also known as Joanne Chesimard. Tributes such as this will not be tolerated by the City University of New York and not by the people of the City of New York. We will not, should not, and can not honor those who have killed our citizens and New Jersey State Trooper Werner Foerster. What lesson does that teach to the students of the City University of New York?"

Senator Golden continued, "I commend Chancellor Matthew Goldstein for his swift action in asking that this sign be dismantled. I implore the Board of Trustees of the City University of New York to vote against such a renaming proposal if it should be brought before them in the future. The City University of New York is focused on teaching the right lessons to the future leaders of our City and State, our Nation and our world, and clearly this has no place in our CUNY school community."
