Golden Names I.S. 30 Student “State Senator For A Day”

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C, 22nd District) this week hosted a contest ceremony for his Senator For A Day Contest on at the Knights of Columbus located at 1305-86th Street in Brooklyn.

This contest invited local school children of Region 6 and Region 7 to write essays no more than 250-words which began with the phrase, "If I were a State Senator for A Day...". Throughout the essay, the students write about issues facing the community such as public safety, park improvements, educational improvements. The winning essays were judged on content and creativity. Pat Russo, former Counsel to the New York State Inspector General, Joel Garson, former member of Community School Board 22 and Publisher of "Our News", and Rebecca Spitz, Reporter for NY 1 News, served as the contest judges.

"The contest has always served as a valuable educational learning tool for both myself and the school children of our community," said Golden, "The children present ideas and address areas of concern in their essays that are legitimate and well thought out. At times, I have taken their suggestions and work towards them in my capacity as a representative, such as the restoration of our parks and increasing police patrol on our streets."

The winner of the contest was Natalie Vantuyn, of I.S. 30’s Class 600. Natalie discussed numerous issues in her essay which she would tackle as Senator including reducing the overcrowding in classrooms. Natalie’s class will now be invited to Albany to see the legislative process in action, and Natalie will have the opportunity to be recognized on the floor of the New York State Senate.
