Senator Golden Statement Of Nyc School Funding

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C-I, 22nd District), who is in Albany today, issued the following statement in response to the call of local parents urging more State funds be directed to New York City public schools:

"Last year, I fought for multiple changes in the building aid formula to increase the amount the City receives in State aid for Capital projects, and each day, I work to insure that the maximum amount of money is awarded to New York City from New York State for school construction. No one agrees more that here in New York City, we needed more classroom space yesterday to meet the population and the demands of the youth of our City."

"Over the last 10 years, State aid for City schools has increased by over 77%, a $2.6 Billion increase, more than any other county in the State of New York and over the last four years, I am proud to have strongly supported these efforts. But New York City schools still deserve a greater portion of State school aid and I am going to do everything I can to see that happens."

"Let’s also not fail to mention the fact that the City of New York could begin to build new schools tomorrow and the State would reimburse the City up to 65% of the cost. We must work together financially, as both a City and a State, to bring about the very best of opportunities for our children. I have long been an advocate for public education, for increasing classroom space and for expanding technological capabilities, and I will continue to stand with the parents in pursuit of these very goals."
