Statement On Death Of Princess Dena Butler Killed In Hit In Run

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden, a personal friend of Princess Dena Butler who has died after suffering massive head trauma following a hit-and-run in the parking lot of a Bay Ridge Dunkin’ Donuts on 94th Street, issued the following statement:

"I am deeply saddened by the horrific reality that Princess Dena Butler, a great friend and great community leader, has been taken from us at the hands of a reckless driver. My heartfelt condolences to the Butler Family who are in my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. I encourage anyone who witnessed the accident to come forward and contact the Police Department with information in order to bring justice in her name.

State Senator Marty Golden worked with Governor George Pataki and his colleagues in the New York State Legislature to adopt legislation that would increase the penalties for drivers who flee the scene of an accident which result in injury or death.

A first violation for leaving the scene of an accident resulting in personal injury will now be a Class A Misdemeanor and subsequent violations will be a Class E Felony. Leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death become a Class D Felony, punishable with a fine between $2,500 and $5,000 and up to 7 years in jail. The law took effect on November 1, 2005.
