Senator Dilan Notes March Is National Nutrition Month

Saying that "the importance of informed food choices and sound eating habits cannot be overemphasized as part of a planned regimen for staying healthy," State Senator Martin Malave Dilan (D-Brooklyn) today reminded his constituents that March is National Nutrition Month, and is an ideal time to evaluate their nutritional intake and habits.

"Eating right, along with being physically active, may be the two greatest factors in living a long and healthy life," said Senator Dilan. "Choosing to take responsibility for what foods we put in our body will go a long way in also determining the quality of life we experience. Diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular problems, are just a few of the types of adverse health situations that may be avoided through adopting sound nutritional and physical activity regimens."

Senator Dilan noted that the American Dietetic Association (ADA)–the nation’s largest organization of food and nutritional professionals–serves the public by promoting optimal nutrition, health and well-being through translating the science of nutrition into practical solutions for healthy living.

"The ADA serves as an excellent resource on what foods to choose to keep us healthy, and they also offer valuable tips on getting proper exercise to help keep our bodies strong and fit," said Senator Dilan.

According to Senator Dilan, the ADA has compiled a "Top Ten List" of reasons why consulting a registered dietician may benefit an individual’s health. Some of those reasons include:

You have diabetes, cardiovascular problems or high blood pressure

You have digestive problems

You’re pregnant or trying to get pregnant

You need to gain or lose weight

You want to eat smarter

"In addition to containing a wealth of information on good nutrition, the ADA website also includes a Nutrition Quiz to help you eat better. I urge my constituents to visit www.eatright.org to help further their knowledge on proper nutrition, and to help improve their overall health," Senator Dilan said. "We can all feel better today, and avoid costly medical bills tomorrow, by adopting good eating habits!"
