Senator Nozzolio Announces Installation Of Traffic Signal On State Route 14 At Skuse And Packwood Roads

Phelps—State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio (R-Fayette) today announced that the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) will be installing a three-color traffic signal at the intersection of State Route 14 at Skuse and Packwood Roads in the Town of Phelps, Ontario County. The installation of the traffic light is the result of numerous discussions that Senator Nozzolio had with Department of Transportation officials regarding his concerns with the dangerous traffic conditions at the intersection.

“The new traffic light will help significantly improve traffic safety at this intersection,” said Senator Nozzolio. “Certainly, nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of our citizens and I was pleased to have played a role in making this area safer for motorists.”

Responding to the safety concerns of his constituents, Senator Nozzolio contacted the New York State Department of Transportation and requested an examination of the traffic conditions at the intersection. After the appropriate studies were concluded, the DOT determined that the installation of a new three-color traffic signal was warranted.

Senator Nozzolio commended Geneva City Councilman John Greco for his interest and efforts to bring attention to the dangerous road conditions at this intersection. Senator Nozzolio also commended Phelps Town Supervisor Norman Teed, Town of Geneva Supervisor Mary Luckern and Ontario County Legislator Charlie Evangelista as well as several local residents for their help in focusing attention on this issue.

John Greco said, “This is great news and I would like to sincerely thank Senator Nozzolio for all of his hard work. Since our meeting last month, there have been another four accidents at the intersection at Skuse and Packwood Roads. If it wasn’t for the Senator pushing to make this intersection safer for motorists, we never would have gotten approval from the Department of Transportation for a traffic signal.”

Studies done by the DOT revealed a pattern of right angle accidents above the statewide average of intersections. After reviewing data, the DOT determined that a three-color traffic signal was the best method available to enhance safety at this location. The installation of the traffic light will occur during the next construction season in Spring 2007.

“One of my most important responsibilities as a State Senator is to listen to the concerns of my constituents and provide whatever assistance I can in helping them to make their communities better and safer places to live. It was a pleasure for me to assist in this matter and to work with the Department of Transportation in making this intersection safer,” Nozzolio concluded.
