Donate Used Ink Cartridges To Help Save Homeless Pets

State Senator Neil D. Breslin (D- Albany) today announced a new charitable program that will help to save the lives of hundreds of abandoned pets. The program sponsored through the pet store chain, PetSmart, will cost nothing -- just a donation of used ink cartridges. Each cartridge sent or brought in will provide $2.00 to PetSmart Charities and go a long way in saving abandoned animals.

"This is a very unique and innovative program. We all use printers, whether it be at work or home, and we are left with seemingly useless empty ink cartridges. Instead of just throwing them in the trash they can now go toward a very worthy cause," Senator Breslin said.

PetSmart began this program in an effort to assist the more than 10 million animals that are abandoned across the United States. Of those pets, more than 4 million are euthanized because they don’t have homes to go to. Nationwide, about 20% of pets are adopted from shelters. It is estimated that about half of the potential adopters who visit a shelter leave without a pet, because they don’t find what they are looking for.

"Far too many pets are left alone in shelters and eventually have to be put down. It is my hope that with this new program, the money PetSmart is able to raise will help in saving lives and finding homes and families for the millions of abandoned animals," said Senator Breslin.
