New York State Anti-trafficking Legislation Introduced By Hudson Valley Senator
Senator Thomas P. Morahanhas introduced legislation to combat human trafficking in New York State. His comprehensive legislation would strengthen the state’s laws relating to human trafficking by increasing penalties, protecting minors; providing victim assistance and cover all aspects of this criminal activity.
"Human trafficking of women, men and children is now recognized as a severe form of abuse and torture. I have introduced this legislation to combat trafficking in New York, which currently serves as an entry, transit, and destination point for large numbers of trafficking victims," said Morahan, who chairs the Senates Committee on Mental Health.
Senator Morahan recently met with humanitarian groups including the Domincan Sisters of Sparkill and Equality Now to discuss his proposed legislation.
A public hearing on Human Trafficking has been scheduled by the Senate Standing Committee on Codes. It will take place on February 2, 2006, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm. at the Senate Hearing Room, 250 Broadway in New York City. Any one who wants to testify should contact Colleen Purcell at (518) 455-3471.
