Senate Majority Leader And Assembly Speaker Agree To Meet To Discuss Assistance For North Rockland

Thomas P. Morahan

New York State Senator Thomas P. Morahan and Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski today announced that they have successfully convinced the Majority Leader of the Senate and the Speaker of the Assembly to jointly participate in discussions to forge a fiscal plan that can reduce the tax burden on for North Rockland School District taxpayers.

A NYS Supreme Court justice recently ruled in favor of Mirant's tax challenge regarding the Bowline power plants, creating a possible $190 million burden for North Rockland School District taxpayers. The meeting of state legislative leaders will take place in September.

Mirant had claimed it was overassessed on its Bowline plants from 1995 through 2003 and on the Lovett plant in Stony Point for three years. The Lovett ruling has not yet been announced. Direct negotiations between Mirant and local municipalities and school districts in North Rockland failed. Local officials and community leaders appealed to Morahan and Zebrowski to attempt to get some form of state fiscal assistance.
