Senator Morahan Announces Skyrocketing Rockland Id Theft Statistics

Joined by law enforcement officials, Senator Thomas Morahan announced the latestID Theft statistics which indicate that Rockland County is one of the top localities in New York State for victims of ID theft.
The Senator indicated that as of October, 2006 there were 176 cases of ID theft reported in Rockland.

"I was shocked to learn that the Town of Clarkstown alone, as of October 10, 2006, had 60 reported cases of ID Theft," theSenator told 400 senior volunteers attending a Retired Senior Volunteers Program (RSVP) eventat the Holiday Inn in Suffern. Morahan, who sponsoredthe 2006 Social Security Privacy Act, announcedthat the SS# legislation hadbeen signed into law by the Governor last month.

The Senator decided to unveil the latest ID Theft data at the RSVP event to encourage the hundreds of participants to get the word out about the growing dangers of ID theft threat, as well as the urgency of protecting one's confidential information.

Also highlighting this announcement will be the presentation and display of a "mini-skimmer device" by law enforcement officials. The miniature data-stealing device can steal an unsuspecting victim's credit card data in a single swipe. Morahan will announce that he has already secured Senate passage of legislation outlawing the device, and will be pushing for Assembly passage.
