Senatator Lanza Votes To Move Primary Election Date

The New York State Senatehas passedlegislation (S.5755) that would move New York State’s primary by one week from September 11, 2007 to September 18, 2007.

"It is critically important that we reserve September 11th as a day when the world looks back and remembers the many heroes who lost their lives." said SenatorLanza. "The New York State primaries are an important symbol of the democratic process which was attacked on that horrible day. However it would be unfitting to hold any event which would distract from the mourning process we undergo each year in honor of those who gave their lives on 9/11.

"September 11th is not just a simple date on the calendar. It marks a tragedy in New York history that deserves special respect and honor. By moving the date of the state primary back by one week, New Yorkers will not have to concern themselves with anything but honoring the lives of those lost on that day," said Senator Lanza.

The New York State Election law traditionally dictates that primary elections be held on the first Tuesday after the second Monday in September. In the 2007 primary election cycle, this Tuesday happened to fall on September 11th. This bill only applies to the 2007 primary. The bill has also been introduced in the New York State Assembly.

It is estimated that 2,819 people died on September 11th 2001. This included approximately 343 firefighters and paramedics along with 23 New York City Police Officers. On September 11th, 2007, New York will honor the sixth year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
