Legislation Cosponsored By Senator Fuschillo Requiring Social Security Numbers To Obtain A Driver License Passed By State Senate
The State Senatehas passed legislation, cosponsored by Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) that would stop Governor Eliot Spitzer’s plan to allow individuals without a social security number to obtain a New York State driver license or non-driver identification card.
Under the legislation, all individuals applying for a driver license or non-driver identification card would have to submit a valid social security number. Applicants who do not have a social security number would have to demonstrate they are ineligible to get a number and provide satisfactory proof that they are legally allowed to be in the United States.
"As the primary form of identification in so many instances, a driver license is a key that can open many doors. Requiring a social security number to obtain a driver license will ensure the security and integrity of this important form of personal identification," said Senator Fuschillo.
The legislation must now be approved by the State Assembly.
