Senator Fuschillo Helps Letter Carriers "stamp Out Hunger"
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently visited the Merrick Post Office to donate food as part of the National Association of Letter Carrier’s annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive, which will take place on Saturday, May 12th.
"Every year, local letter carriers collect a tremendous amount of food to help assist the families in our community who have fallen on hard times." said Senator Fuschillo. "This is a very worthwhile cause which will help feed many families."
Entering its 15th year, the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive is the nation’s largest single day food drive. Letter carriers collect non-perishable food items from people’s homes while they are delivering mail along their routes. The food that is collected is then distributed to local food banks, pantries, and shelters. Last year’s event collected over 70 million pounds of food for families in need.
Residents who would like to participate in the "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive should place non-perishable items, such as canned meat, fish and soup, and cereals, pasta, and rice, in a bag near their mailbox on Saturday, May 12th before their letter carrier arrives. The letter carrier will pick it up and take it back to the local post office. All the food collected during the drive will then be delivered it to a local food bank, pantry, or shelter.
