Senator Fuschillo Names 94 Year Old Girl Scout A New York State Senate "woman Of Distinction"
New York State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) today presented 94 year-old Florence Meiselbach of Bellmore with the New York State Senate "Woman of Distinction" award for her over 80 years of service with the Girl Scouts of America. Mrs. Meiselbach is one of Long Island's oldest living Girl Scouts.
Senator Fuschillo presented Mrs. Meiselbach with the award, which includes her photograph and biography, that was displayed as part of a special public exhibit at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.
"During her eight decades of devoted service to scouting, Florence Meiselbach helped several generations of young girls grow and learn about the importance of leadership, character, and education," said Senator Fuschillo. "Her commitment to scouting and to helping young women is truly worthy of commendation, and it is my pleasure to congratulate this incredible woman."
Mrs. Meiselbach joined the Girl Scouts in 1925 at the age of 12 and earned over 25 merit badges. Believing in the importance of teaching leadership, responsibility and respect, she continued her commitment as an adult. In the 1940s, she began serving as a troop leader for her daughters. She remained in that capacity for over 25 years, also leading her granddaughter's troop in the 1970s. Mrs. Meiselbach stayed an active member in the years that followed, helping empower another generation of girls with the character and skills needed to lead a successful life. She still maintains her Girl Scout membership to this day.
Mrs. Meiselbach's desire to help children carried over to the professional world, where she worked as a school monitor for over 30 years in both the Bellmore and North Bellmore School Districts.
Prior to being named a 2007 Woman of Distinction by Senator Fuschillo, Mrs. Meiselbach's years of devoted service earned her the Lamb Award, a national recognition bestowed upon Lutheran adults to acknowledge their dedication to helping young people. She also received the Girl Scouts Life Appreciation Award and the Citizenship Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars-Bellmore Post.
Mrs. Meiselbach and her late husband, Joseph, moved to Bellmore in 1943. She is the proud mother of four children, grandmother of 13 grandchildren, and great-grandmother of 21 great-grandchildren.
The New York State Senate's "Women of Distinction" program was created in 1998 to recognize outstanding women living and working in New York State whose contributions have greatly enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond.
