Senator Fuschillo Offers Information About Direct New York State Property Tax Rebate Program For Long Island Middle Class Families

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Hundreds of dollars in direct property tax relief are again coming to Long Island middle class families this fall, State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) announced today.

"During this year’s New York State budget negotiations, we fought for a direct property tax relief program that puts hundreds of dollars in tax savings back in the pockets of local families," said Senator Fuschillo. "This rebate, which is on top of the savings homeowners receive through the New York State STAR program, will help provide additional tax relief to Long Island’s overburdened taxpayers."

Homeowners with the Basic STAR exemption will receive a packet from the State Department of Taxation and Finance containing an application for the rebate check. These packets, which also include a unique "STAR code" that identifies the applicant’s property, are scheduled to be mailed to Long Islanders beginning September 24th. Applications, which can be completed through the mail or online, must be filed by November 30th.

Seniors who have the Enhanced STAR exemption will automatically receive their rebate checks and are not required to fill out an application. Rebate checks for these seniors are scheduled to be mailed beginning the week of September 3rd.

New York State property tax rebate savings are calculated by the State Department of Taxation and Finance and are based on a combination of factors, including the homeowner’s income bracket, their school district’s tax rate, and the city, village or town where they live.
