Senator Fuschillo Secures State Grant To Purchase Handicapped Accessible Van For Students At Ucpn's Children's Learning Center
Joined by teachers and students, Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) helped cut the ribbon on a brand new wheelchair accessible van that will be used to transport children attending the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s (UCPN) Children’s Learning Center. Senator Fuschillo secured $36,000 in state funding for UCPN to purchase the van.
"Enabling these boys and girls to go into the community and experience some of the same things as students without disabilities will not only improve their education, it will bring smiles to their faces," said Senator Fuschillo. "This new funding literally gives the Children’s Learning Center a vehicle to accomplish those two important goals."
"On behalf of UCPN and the Children’s Learning Center, I’d like to thank Senator Fuschillo for securing funding to help us further educate our children by involving them in our community. His continued support of our organization and all people with disabilities is greatly admired and appreciated," said Robert McGuire, Executive Director of UCPN.
The van, will allow the school to take ambulatory and non-ambulatory children on educational field trips into the community. This will allow them to experience some of the same things as students without disabilities, such as visiting museums, parks, libraries, and other important social, educational, and recreational facilities.
Located in Roosevelt, the Children’s Learning Center is a school that serves 250 students with disabilities. Students are between the ages of 2 and 21 years old, and have disabilities that range between mild to severe.
