Senator Skelos, Assemblyman Barra, Lirr President Helena Williams And Mayor Curran Announce New High Security Fencing For Lynbrook
New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) and Assemblyman Bob Barra (R-Lynbrook), announced that in response to the recent tree trimming campaign in Lynbrook, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has agreed to install high security fencing along Sunrise Highway between Ocean Avenue and Denton Avenue.
"With the removal of the trees and lower lying vegetation along the tracks an unsafe condition was created allowing unobstructed access to the track. I commend the LIRR for expediting the installation of this much needed fencing that will further ensure the safety of our residents", said Senator Skelos. "In addition, I look forward to working with the Village and the LIRR to develop a landscaping plan that will keep with the character of the Village and add to the beautification efforts of the area."
"We have been working very closely with Lynbrook officials and Sen. Skelos' office to make sure that the LIRR Right of Way will be secured with new fencing in the area along Sunrise Highway. Whenever we clear areas of vegetation along the Right of Way, we also send in crews to clean up any debris left behind. The removal of overgrowth along the LIRR Right of Way is critical for the safe operation of the Rail Road. Engineers operating trains must be able to clearly see stop and other signals. In addition, vegetation often grows around our communication lines that run along the Right of Way. Winter storms can take down trees, possibly damaging our signal and communication system and thereby causing us to shut down portions of the Rail Road. Finally, vegetation control reduces the chances that falling leaves on LIRR tracks will create a dangerous condition known as "slip slide" that can cause breaks on LIRR trains to malfunction. While we recognize the vegetation control program will expose parts of the Right of Way, this effort is necessary for the safe operation of the Rail Road." Said Helena Williams, President, LIRR.
Assemblyman Bob Barra said "The improvements that are being made are essential to the safety of our local residents in particular our children. I applaud the Rail Road for taking our concerns seriously and moving to install the security fencing in a timely manner. I am committed to working with the LIRR and the Village of Lynbrook to ensure that our village remains safe while also protecting the integrity of our community along Sunrise Highway"
