Senator Savino Blasts Senate Gop For Fiscal Irresponsibility
State Senator Diane J. Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) today blasted the Senate's State Senator Diane J. Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) today blasted the Senate's Majority for proposing to eliminate strategic reserves created by the Executive Budget and increase anticipated deficits in future budgets, calling it "the height of fiscal irresponsibility."
She said the Majority plans to add billions of dollars in spending to the Governor's budget "would condemn the State to spiraling deficits and property taxes."
Senator Savino said New York "has the nation's highest property taxes and a stagnant economy because a dysfunctional State government refused to act responsibly and reign in spending."
Senator Savino said Governor Spitzer has "attempted to change the status quo, and show real leadership and the courage to make difficult choices."
She said "the Governor has called for greater accountability and responsibility, and we must heed that call if we are to truly change our government for the better."
Senate's Majority, however, "continue to cling to the status quo, continue to do business as usual and continue to ignore the critical issues facing New York State."
Senator Savino said the Senate Minortiy are committed to providing New Yorkers with "health care that is both affordable and excellent, with schools that are properly functioning and properly funded and with property taxes that are appropriate and affordable."
However, she said the State "can and must achieve those goals in a fiscally responsible way, and without abandoning our commitment to responsible and accountable government."
