New Fitness Equipment Available At The Senior Center In Elmira

George Winner

Elmira, N.Y.-- State Senator George H. Winner, Jr. (R-C-I, Elmira), Assemblyman Tom O’Mara (R-C, Horseheads), Chemung County Executive Tom Santulli and other city and county leadersrecently joined the directors, staff and members of The Senior Center for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the Center’s newly redesigned and upgraded Fitness Room.

"The Senior Center plays a vital role in the lives of many area seniors," said Winner. "Our senior population is anticipated to increase dramatically in the coming years. So I’m pleased to have the opportunity to help The Senior Center keep pace with current fitness trends and technologies, and offer a place for so many seniors to stay physically fit and healthy."

The Senior Center began planning last year to update its exercise equipment and to replace existing equipment that no longer met state standards. Winner secured $30,000 in the 2006-07 New York State budget to help achieve the Center’s goals. As a result, the Center worked with Advantage Sport & Fitness, Inc. to redesign its Fitness Room and purchase new equipment including state-of-the-art treadmills, recumbent and upright exercise bicycles, ARC trainers, Nu-Step recumbent steppers, fitbells and dumbbells.

In addition to the Fitness Room, the Center offers its members a variety of other recreational activities, including Tai Chi and furniture caning. Monthly breakfasts and health screenings are also available.

Membership at The Senior Center is free to anyone 55 years old or older. For more information, contact 733-8254.
