Senator Farley Honors Niskayuna Volunteer As Contemporary Woman Of Distinction

State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) will honor Niskayuna volunteer, environmental activist and local author Eleanor Brown as a recipient of the New York State Senate’s annual "Women of Distinction" award at a ceremony to be held on Tuesday, June 5th, in Albany.

The program honors distinguished women whose outstanding work in their communities makes them deserving of special recognition by the State Senate.

"Eleanor Brown is an energetic woman who has enjoyed a successful career as an author and editor. She focused her volunteer energies on environmental issues by serving as Commissioner of the Adirondack Park Agency and the Adirondack Mountain Club Conservation Committee, while balancing these commitments with family. Young girls can look to Eleanor to see what true leadership is," Senator Farley said.

Ms. Brown was an editor for the SUNY Research Foundation in Albany, for the General Electric Research Laboratory in Niskayuna, for the Princeton Alumni Weekly, and for the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. She also contributed her talents to the Adironack Mountain Club by editing the Adirondac from 1967 through 1973, and writing numerous articles in that publication. She is also the author of The Forest Preserve of New York State: A Handbook for Conservationists and has contributed to the NYS Conservationist and Adirondack Life.

A resident of Schenectady County, Ms. Brown's numerous volunteer activities include: member of the NYS Canal Recreationway Commission from 1993 to 1997; co-chair of the Organization for Action for the Riverfront, which worked with the Schenectady County Environmental Advisory Council to promote county-long hike-and-bike trail along the Mohawk River from 1975 to 1993; trustee of the Schenectady County Public Library from 1972 to 1977; and president of the Friends of the Library from 1970 to 1971.

"This remarkable woman whose life, work and special accomplishments contribute to making our communities better and making our families stronger," said Senator Farley. "The Senate's Women of Distinction program provides an opportunity to honor Ms. Brown for her achievements."
