John J. Bonacic

State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/I/C - Mount Hope) announced today that the New York State Department of Agriculture is distributing applications for dairy farmers in order for them to obtain vital assistance. Applications are also available on line at www.agmkt.state.ny.us or by calling 1(800) 554-4501.

"The dairy industry is a $3 billion industry in New York State and it is in the best interest of every New Yorker to financially strengthen our dairy farms," stated Senator Bonacic. "It is important for us, as lawmakers, to support this vital part of our state’s rural communities. Dairy farms generate tens of thousands of jobs both on and off farms, yet they are struggling to due high energy, feed costs, flooding, and low milk prices."

Senator Bonacic said that as part of the final State Budget, $30 million was allocated to the Dairy Assistance Program as a result of the Senate Majority’s efforts. The Governor and the Democratic Assembly did not offer any assistance to our farmers in either budget proposal.

The Department of Agriculture and Markets is in the process of mailing applications for this assistance to the over 6,000 dairy farmers throughout the State that are eligible for the program. The deadline for applications is April 27, 2007 and payment to milk producers is anticipated on May 9, 2007. If you are a milk producer and would like to determine your eligibility, call the Department of Agriculture and Markets toll-free at 1(800) 554-4501.
