Senator Flanagan And Councilman Wehrheim Secure Funding For Smithtown Firefighters

John J. Flanagan

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) and Town of Smithtown Councilman Ed Wehrheim recently attended the monthly meeting of the Smithtown Fire Chief's Council to announce the securing of over $80,000 in government funding. The funding that the two jointly worked to obtain will offset the cost of two important projects that the council has been working to finalize.

The first project will utilize $35,000 to purchase and install satellite phones. Satellite phones allow for better and more consistent communication in cases where an emergency or catastrophic event renders regular communication systems useless.

According to the council, this will lead to more effective communication between the departments and allow them to better serve the community and the residents.

A portion of the remaining funds will be used by the council to install a much needed rest room facility at the Edward Mankuski Firematic Training Center on Middle Country Road in Smithtown. This OSHA certified bathroom will provide some convenience to the emergency personnel while they train to protect the residents of Smithtown.

The Smithtown Fire Chief's Council brings together the seven departments that serve the Town of Smithtown. The council, which was organized in 1952, comprises the Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Nesconset, Nissequogue, Smithtown and St. James areas.

"I am pleased to be able to provide assistance to our Smithtown firefighters. Their service is vital to the safety of our residents," said Councilman Wehrheim. "I also thank Senator Flanagan for his continued efforts in supporting the Smithtown community."

"The service that these departments provide to our community deserve our praise and, more importantly, our continued support. I am proud to assist the Smithtown Fire Chief's Council in their efforts and I look forward to working with them in the future," stated Senator Flanagan. "I also want to thank all the volunteer firefighters this council represents for all they do for our community and for the sacrifice they make."
