Senator Flanagan Discusses Child Protection On Wliw's Q & A

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) will appear as a guest on WLIW Channel 21’s Q&A program to discuss the issue of protecting children from Internet predators. The show will air on Monday, May 7th at 7:30 p.m and replay on Saturday, May 12th at 7:00 a.m.

During his segment on the show, Senator Flanagan joined host Alexander Johnson and fellow guest Richard P. Donoghue, Assistant United States Attorney and the Chief of the Long Island Criminal Division, to warn parents about the dangers of this growing crime and to discuss the efforts of the State Leglature and law enforcement community to protect our children.

As part of that discussion, Senator Flanagan spoke about new state laws that will protect children from sexually explicit e-mail and the expansion of the New York State Sex Offender registry. He also discussed the need for parents to be vigilant in monitoring their children’s use of the Internet and to talk openly and honestly to their children about the dangers that exist.

"It is so vital that our laws keep pace with new forms of criminal activity sprouting up every day on the Internet. By working with law enforcement, we have provided essential tools for combatting a wide range of Internet crimes, but we must continue to be aggressive in order to stay one step ahead of the criminals," stated Senator Flanagan. "Ultimately, parents need to make sure that they have honest discussions about the potential dangers of the Internet."

In his continuing effort to protect the children of our community, Senator Flanagan has recently released a report that calls for the enactment of a wide array of measures to protect children throughout New York from the dangers posed by Internet predators, child pornography and child sexual abuse. The report from the task force, entitled “Protecting Children in the Internet Age", outlines the actions that the Senate believes are needed to protect the children of New York State.
