Senator Flanagan Honored For His Efforts On Behalf Of Stony Brook Students

John J. Flanagan

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) was honored with the Student Life Award by the Stony Brook University Division of Student Affairs in appreciation for his work on behalf of the students.

The award is given annually to an individual who exemplifies, through their work and life, a commitment to developing the Stony Brook campus, the community and the students of Stony Brook. Senator Flanagan was presented the honor by the Vice President for Student Affairs and Associate Provost for Enrollment & Retention Management Peter M. Baigent at the Twenty-Sixth Annual Student Affairs convocation which was recently held on the Stony Brook campus.

The honor was awarded on behalf of the Division of Student Affairs to recognize Senator Flanagan's support in promoting and securing necessary funding of the Campus Recreation Center. According to the university, the Campus Recreation Center will serve as a hub of student activity that promotes the health and well-being of our student population.

Senator Flanagan was also acknowledged as a long time supporter of Stony Brook University for his role in securing funding for various university projects and for his legislative efforts. In particular, Dr. Baigent noted Senator Flanagan's role in the startup of the Stony Brook University Medical Center Brady William Russell Memorial Fund, his work to designate the Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities as a Center of Excellence to enable access to research and funding and his support of the Strategically Targeted Academic Research (STAR) Center in Biomolecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics.

"This award is truly special and greatly appreciated. It is always a pleasure to help improve this fine university but when that work directly benefits the life of the students, it is even more special," stated Senator Flanagan. "I thank everyone at the university for this honor and look forward to continuing our partnership for the betterment of the students and the community."
