Senator Flanagan Reminds Motorists Of Inspection Policy

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) would like to remind drivers who received their inspection stickers in either January or February of 2006 which provided them with a specific ten-day period of expiration that they are valid throughout the end of the month denoted on the sticker. All inspection stickers throughout the state are valid throughout the entire month of expiration regardless of any date stamped on the sticker.

Last February, under Senate urging, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) rescinded a short-lived policy which afforded motorists with a mere ten-day window to renew their inspections. Under this now-rescinded policy, inspections were set to expire in either the first, second or third portion of the month and this gave motorists only that section of the month to have their motor vehicles inspected.

While the DMV repealed the policy last February after only two months, some residents may still have inspection stickers that indicate that their inspection expires in the middle of the month. The DMV, via their web site, has assured these drivers that they will inform law enforcement agencies to ignore any date punched on an expiration sticker. They will also inform these agencies that all inspection stickers expire at the end of the month stated on the sticker.

"Restricting the time hardworking people have to get their cars inspected only adds to the frustration people have with governmentagencies. I applaud the DMV for having the commonsense to rescind this annoying policy and protect the rights of New York State drivers of our state," stated Senator Flanagan. "This was a flawed plan from the beginning and its cancellation is good for all drivers."
